Abstract

The article examines the informational potential of a group of documents on the history of the insurgent movement in Mangystau in 1931, extracted from Fund No. 9 of the Special State Archive of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The documents date from June to September 1931 and relate directly to the events that took place in Mangystau — the insurgent movement of Kazakh peasants against the policy of the “Little October” and forced collectivization. The article presents a detailed characterization of the composition and content of this group of documentary sources and determines their representativeness, nature, and specificity. The aims and objectives of the study include, first of all, clarifying the significance of the examined documents within the corpus of sources for an objective study of the history of the insurgent movement in Mangystau in 1931. In addition, the conditions under which the documents were created are identified, revealing the causal relationships behind the emergence and development of armed uprisings in the Mangystau region. The content of the documents demonstrates the level of awareness of their authors regarding the background and orientation of the events and makes it possible to comprehensively and objectively assess and define the activities of the regional structures of the Plenipotentiary Representation of the OGPU in Kazakhstan, units and subdivisions of the Red Army, divisions of the Military OGPU, and communist detachments, as well as their place and role in suppressing armed uprisings in the Mangystau region. A collection of 52 documents (reports, radiograms, orders, operation plans, directives, and others) provides a comprehensive account of the history of the insurgent movement in Mangystau in 1931. The sources reflect the strategy and tactics employed to suppress the uprising, the operational situation, and the course of military actions. They are distinguished by their high representativeness, multidimensional character, and significant informational value.
