Abstract

The article analyzes the dynamics and conceptual evolution of English-language research published between 1991 and 2025 on the gender dimension of migration. The Google Scholar academic search platform was used to identify and select the publications included in the study. The relevance of the research is determined by growing scholarly interest in gender inequality, the feminization of migration, the transformation of family roles, and changes in the structure of the global labor market. In contemporary academic discourse, examining migration processes through the interrelationship between gender differences and social hierarchies has become an important area of research. Although traditional migration theories treated migrants as gender-neutral subjects, in practice the male worker was regarded as the primary subject of migration. The article traces the evolution of scholarly perspectives from this traditional view to contemporary intersectional, transnational, and critical approaches that focus on the intersections of gender, class, ethnicity, citizenship status, and other forms of social inequality. Particular attention is paid to the works of international scholars who have made significant contributions to the development of gender theory in migration studies, the concept of gender mainstreaming, and the institutional limitations of its implementation in the migration policies of international organizations and nation-states. The study identifies a shift in contemporary scholarship from examining female migration as a separate phenomenon toward a more comprehensive analysis of the transformation of gender roles, the global gender division of labor, transnational care, and intersecting forms of discrimination. The long-standing neglect of the gender dimension in migration theory is shown to reflect gender «blindness» in migration policy at the conceptual level. This problem is also manifested at the institutional level and affects the effectiveness of mechanisms for implementing gender equality policies. The practical significance of the article lies in the potential application of its findings to the development of gender sensitive migration policies, the improvement of mechanisms for protecting migrants’ rights, and further research on migration processes in Kazakhstan within the context of contemporary international academic debates.
